In the morning, I woke up and looked at my phone to see the call had ended. I blinked against the bright blue light, trying to force my eyes to focus, when I saw a text from Cole.

Have a nice day out with your brother. I don’t want you to stress about money, so here’s some pocket cash. Noah has demanded a dinosaur skeleton from the Natural History Museum after I showed him a picture of it. I tried to manage his expectations, but I’m afraid he has far too much faith in you.

Beneath the text message was a mobile payment for five hundred dollars. What followed was rapid chain of texts between us with me insisting that he’d sent too much, and him insisting he hadn’t. After threatening to send it back, he swore he’d have spent that money on me either way, so I wound up relenting and accepting his insane kindness.

Once I settled into the idea of being a little spoiled on this trip, though, I did a feel a little liberated from the concerns I might have had over the activities Jack and I did together. It would be nice to go out without having to worry about costing my brother too much money or not being able to enjoy myself because I had to pinch my pennies.

We ventured out to a nearby bagel joint Jack had been raving about all morning. The line was long, but the wait was worth it. We indulged in the most delicious, chewy everything-bagels smeared with cream cheese and piled high with lox, sprouts, and capers. I’d never had such a delicious bagel in my life, and I knew the quick breakfast option would ruin me forever. We savored each bite, enjoying the quintessential New York experience.

With our hunger satisfied, we moved on to Broadway to catch the matinee of Lycantown: The Musical. It was a poignant commentary meant to open the minds of non-shifters to the everyday struggles of lycans, covering everything from healthcare to marriage to the court of law. By the end of it, I was crying my eyes out during a tragic scene while Jack hugged me close and comforted me.

After the musical, we opted to go straight to lunch as Jack’s friend was not in the cast for the matinee after all. Jack talked my ear off about a local Italian place that had a lasagna that was to die for. As we rode in the taxi through the city, I noticed my brother was a little jumpy. He kept looking at his phone and typing out messages, but whenever I asked who he was talking to, he dodged the question or changed the subject.

Finally, we pulled up outside of the restaurant and hopped out of the cab. Jack wiped his hands on his pants as if they were sweaty, then opened the door and gestured me inside.

My eyes were on him the entire time, so I didn’t immediately notice the other diners at the tables inside the cozy establishment.
